What's wrong with grocery store chicken?
On Vital Votes, Dr. Matthew Loop of Lilburn, Georgia writes:
"The commercialization of meat production illustrates most clearly how taking control of our food supply (domesticating, breeding, and artificial feeding) has affected its nutritional content and our physical health!
"For example, chickens are possibly the most abused animal on the face of the planet. These conventional birds are crammed in filthy sheds by the tens of thousands, immersed in their own excrement among the corpses of other birds who died of heart attacks or stress ..."
Vital Votes reader Steve from Toms River, New Jersey adds:
"I never knew how absolutely disgusting factory farming really is until reading Dr. Mercola's book, The Great Bird Flu Hoax. What an eye opener to the reality of corporate greed that does not give a darn about the quality of food produced. It's ALL about profits and never about consumer health.
"If you want instant proof, watch the Wegman's Cruelty video, also noted in the book. This is a must see, free 27 minute video. Sadly, it's not just chickens and eggs. Add to the equation -- non-organic: beef, pork, seafood, vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, etc. The list goes on."
Spring Hill Farms highly recommends Dr Mercola's site for good information on many health topics.

How is pastured poultry from Spring Hill Farms different?
Our birds have constant access to the outdoors and fresh air. Contrast that with commercial, confinement, operations that face problems such as:
Fecal dust contamination - Feathers, eyes, lungs nothing can escape it in a confinement barn full of chickens.
High levels of ammonia in the air - This causes irritation to the lungs and causes lesions.
We never de-beak our chickens.
Confinement birds are routinely de-beaked which we classify as mutilation.
We don't feed arsenic to our chickens.
Arsenic is fed to conventionally raised birds as a growth promoter in their feed. While it is banned in Europe, the US FDA has failed to ban this toxic substance.
In the report "Playing Chicken: Avoiding Arsenic in Your Meat." It was found that of 155 samples from uncooked supermarket chicken, 55 percent contained detectable arsenic. In chicken breasts as high as 21.2 parts per billion.
The poultry industry claims that arsenic levels found in chickens are so low consumers have no worries. But the EPA has set saftey standards of arsenic in water at 10 parts per billion.*
