Pastured Tamworth Swine Genetics

Tamworth Piglet
Since purchasing our first Tamworth gilts and boars our focus at Spring Hill Farms has been three-fold:
1. Produce pigs that thrive on grass.
2. Develop Parasite resistance.
3. Raise hogs that are low maintenance.
Our pigs are great bacon producers and have a good rate of growth. They will do as well as most any pig if given constant access to feed in a self-feeder.
The carcass quality overall is better than ever for the Tamworth breed. The number one carcass on the rail at the Ohio State fair a few years ago was a Tamworth.
If you are looking for Tamworth hogs that can utilize pasture to its fullest extent look no further. Our goal has always been trim grain back to the bare minimum, yet still get pigs to market in a timely manner.
You can turn our pigs out on pasture and know they aren't going to fall apart. They were born on pasture and so were many past generations. We aggressively cull for the traits we want. If a sow can't raise a litter of pigs without us babysitting she is culled. All of our sows farrow without assistance.
Big litters are the norm for us. If a sow doesn't raise a minimum of eight pigs, we cull her. The normal litter being between 10 and 14 pigs.
Our sows are protective but not mean. Our motto is be nice or be food.
Boars are extremely active breeders and are quite prepotent in fixing their type of offspring.
The Tamworth is a rugged, thrifty, very active breed of swine that is favored by many persons who are interested in raising a lean-type hog. The sows, like those of the Yorkshire breed, are excellent mothers and do a good job of suckling their litters. The Tamworth is an extremely high-quality breed and is the most active breed of swine that we have in America. People who particularly want hogs that will rustle behind cattle or harvest or salvage crops sometimes prefer Tamworths. The Tamworth has the reputation of producing the best bacon of any of our breeds and is uniform in type. It is one of the most prepotent of the breeds in fixing its type of offspring. - http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/breeds/swine/
